Through the hard work of this committee CENTRAL ALABAMA PRIDE (CAP) was incorporated in October of 1999. The name CENTRAL ALABAMA PRIDE, INC. was chosen in an effort to include Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Gadsden and other communities in the area. The Board of Directors for 1999 were: President, Don Mills; Vice President, Edward Clayton, Treasurer, Ed DiAngelo; Secretary, Julie Price; Members-at-Large, Sean Michaels (Libertee Belle), Robert Eskridge, Russell Drummond and Richard Barham; and a Pride Day Event Chair John McDole. An Advisory Committee was formed with representatives from Gay/Lesbian organizations, businesses and bars in the area. The Board and Advisory Committee meet at least Quarterly to provide for more community input on the events.
During the months between October and June, the new organization embarked on new avenues of fundraising, instituting Pride Partners, a sponsorship program ranging from $25 to $2,500, which raised over $8,000 in it's first year. Other fundraising efforts resulted in a total of over $18,000 being raised to fund our "10 Days of Pride" and our annual Day In The Park & Parade. The "10 Days of Pride" included a Bowling Event, Pool Tournament, Karaoke Contest and Title Pageants for Mr./Miss/Ms./Mys-Her Gay Pride. The Day In The Park & Parade was attended by about 1,000 who enjoyed Two Stages of entertainment featuring Pride Titleholders, local talent and headline entertainer "Abigail" and participation by 27 vendor and organizational booths.
During the fall months work was completed on the organizations tax exempt application and the organization was granted Tax Exempt Status under section 501(c)(3) of the Federal Incom Tax Code, making contributions since the date of incorporation in October 1999 and all future contributions tax deductible.
